"Once" tells the quiet, tender story of a Dublin street musician and the Czech immigrant who wanders into his orbit, their connection built through shared songs rather than grand declarations. Shot on a shoestring budget with a naturalistic, almost documentary feel, the film captures Dublin's gray streets and small apartments with an intimacy that feels lived-in rather than staged. Music runs through nearly every scene, with original songs that carry as much narrative weight as the dialogue itself.

Watching this one on the big screen at The Beverly Theater feels especially fitting given the venue's acoustics and its history of hosting live music alongside film. The story's rough-edged charm and its Oscar-winning song "Falling Slowly" tend to land differently in a room built for sound, where the quieter musical moments can actually breathe. It's a slow, melancholic film, but one that rewards patience with something genuinely moving by the end.
