Peter Bogdanovich's black-and-white elegy to a dying Texas town gets a screening on the big screen at The Beverly Theater. Shot in stark, luminous monochrome, the film follows a group of teenagers in a small oil town in the early 1950s as their local movie palace shutters for good, a quiet symbol of the changes rippling through their lives and their community. Cybill Shepherd, Jeff Bridges, and Timothy Bottoms anchor a cast full of longing, boredom, and the particular ache of growing up somewhere that's already fading away.

The Beverly Theater's intimate 150-seat main theater suits this kind of picture well, close enough to catch every flicker of light and shadow in the cinematography, quiet enough to sit with the film's slow, melancholic rhythm. Ben Johnson's performance as Sam the Lion, the wistful heart of the town, remains one of the more understated pieces of acting from that era of American film, and seeing it projected in a proper theater setting, rather than on a home screen, gives the movie's sense of space and stillness room to breathe.

Afterward, the theater's terrace and cocktail lounge offer a good spot to linger over the film's mood, maybe talk through its themes of nostalgia, small-town isolation, and the passage of time with whoever you came with.
