Death's convoluted design gets another workout in this fifth installment of the franchise that turns "avoiding your fate" into an elaborate obstacle course of collapsing bridges, gymnastic mishaps, and laser eye surgery gone catastrophically wrong. A group of coworkers cheat a bridge collapse thanks to a premonition, only to discover that Death doesn't take kindly to being outsmarted and starts working through the survivors in a sequence that nobody sees coming until it's too late.
Watching this one in 3-D at The Beverly Theater adds a certain dimension to the increasingly creative death sequences the series is known for—every falling object and shard of glass gets that extra pop when it's coming at the screen. The intimate setting of this 150-seat theater makes the whole thing feel more immediate, like you're trapped in the same gymnasium as the characters, waiting for the next piece of equipment to malfunction spectacularly.
There's a gleeful, almost theatrical logic to how these films stage their disasters, and this entry leans hard into the Rube Goldberg machine quality that makes the series oddly entertaining even as it's fundamentally about elaborate ways for people to meet grisly ends. Bring someone who appreciates dark humor and doesn't mind flinching in their seat.
