Todd Haynes' 2002 melodrama gets the big-screen treatment it deserves at The Beverly Theater, where the venue's intimate setting feels right at home with this lush, Technicolor-inspired homage to 1950s domestic drama. Julianne Moore stars as a seemingly perfect suburban housewife whose meticulously composed world begins to unravel after she discovers her husband's secret and finds an unexpected connection with her Black gardener, played by Dennis Haysbert, in an era when such a friendship carried real social risk.

The film is a visual feast, awash in autumn leaves, saturated color palettes, and the kind of stylized cinematography that pays loving tribute to the melodramas of Douglas Sirk. Beneath the gorgeous surface lies a sharp examination of race, sexuality, and the suffocating expectations placed on women in mid-century America. Watching it in a theater setting, rather than at home, gives the film's deliberate pacing and painterly compositions room to breathe, and The Beverly's small main theater with its noted acoustics makes for a fitting home for a film so attentive to mood and atmosphere.
