Picture a continent so remote and unforgiving that it's defined almost entirely by ice, snow, and the creatures tough enough to call it home. Dr. Heather Lynch, a quantitative ecologist and National Geographic Explorer who has spent years studying Antarctica's wildlife, brings her firsthand knowledge of the frozen landscape to the stage at Reynolds Hall. Through photography and storytelling, she takes the audience through the colonies of penguins that populate the icy shores, exploring their behaviors, their resilience, and the delicate ecosystem they're part of.

This isn't just a slideshow about cute animals waddling across ice floes, though there's plenty of that charm involved too. Lynch's research digs into the data behind penguin populations and what their patterns reveal about the health of Antarctica's broader environment. Expect a mix of science and adventure, as she recounts what it's actually like to work in one of the most isolated places on the planet, surrounded by wind, cold, and thousands of birds who seem entirely unbothered by human visitors.

The talk fits into the larger National Geographic Live series, which brings explorers, photographers, and scientists to share stories from their fieldwork around the world. For anyone curious about the natural world beyond the usual tourist destinations, or who's always wondered what penguins actually do all day when no one's watching, this presentation offers a window into a part of the world most people will never see in person.
