Dan the Automator

Dan the Automator is a legendary producer and DJ whose genre-bending work has helped define alternative hip-hop for over two decades. Born Daniel Nakamura, he first made waves with the cult classic "Dr. Octagonecologyst," a woozy, sci-fi-tinged hip-hop record that became an underground sensation. His cinematic, sample-heavy production style—rich with strings, horns, and offbeat humor—set him apart from typical beatmakers of the era.

Beyond Dr. Octagon, Dan the Automator has built an impressively eclectic catalog, co-founding the concept group Handsome Boy Modeling School alongside Prince Paul and producing the ambitious sci-fi rap opera Deltron 3030 with Del the Funky Homosapien and Kid Koala. His fingerprints can also be found on early Gorillaz material, helping shape the virtual band's genre-defying sound.
