Buzzcocks

Buzzcocks are one of the founding bands of the UK punk explosion, formed in Manchester in 1976 by Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto. Alongside the Sex Pistols and The Clash, they helped define the sound and DIY ethos of the era, but they distinguished themselves with a knack for melody, packing infectious pop hooks and hummable choruses into fast, buzzing guitar tracks. Their early single "Spiral Scratch" is often cited as a landmark of independent, self-released punk records, and later hits like "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)" and "What Do I Get?" became genre classics that influenced countless pop-punk and power-pop acts that followed.

What set Buzzcocks apart was their fusion of punk aggression with a genuine pop sensibility, along with lyrics that tackled love, heartbreak, and everyday frustration with wit and vulnerability rather than pure snarl. Pete Shelley's songwriting gave the band a lasting legacy that stretched far beyond punk's initial burst, and the group's sound has echoed through generations of guitar-driven bands. Despite lineup changes and breaks over the decades, Buzzcocks has remained a touring and recording act, celebrated for keeping the spirit of classic UK punk alive while never losing sight of a great tune.
